Essential Oils have become somewhat of a buzz word these days.
Everyone is talking about them and rarely do you meet someone who hasn’t heard of them. Some may consider them the latest fad to sweep through like skinny jeans and gluten free eating, but for those who use them on a daily base, they are so much more than another trend.
If you find yourself wondering about these and what they might possibly contribute to your life, you have come to the right place. I am all about showing you how these simple oils can change your life.
Essential Oils are considered the “life blood” of the plant. What does this mean? What makes them so important in plant life? The oil in a plant carries nutrition throughout the plant and helps it to expel waste and toxins. Quite literally, these oils, are absolutely essential to the life and well being of a plant. They give plants their distinctive smells. They protect the plants and play a role in pollination.
Essential Oils are also volatile aromatic compounds. This is a pretty big description that meant nothing to me until someone broke it down for me. Basically, these compounds are small organic molecules that tend to change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. This ability to change state quickly is what earns them the name “volatile”. When you first open a bottle of essential oil, you instantly notice that the aroma is potent and you can smell it typically even from some distance. The physical and chemical properties of the volatile aromatic compounds that compose essential oils allow them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose. This makes them ideal for using these compounds from plants to help maintain a healthy mind and body. Over 3,000 varieties of volatile aromatic compounds have been identified to date. That is amazing to me! And each one serves different purposes and helps support our bodies in different ways. While that number can seem daunting, we will be focusing on just a few to get started. Here is the blend of oils I used when I was first introduced to essential oils. This blend was amazing and changed the way I looked at these natural options:
I want to shift gears for a moment and talk about a few things that you may be dealing with. Your life is busy and chaotic and often times your health and well being gets pushed to the back burner. For just a few minutes, I want you to read through the following questions and answer in your mind, on a scale of 1-10 where you might fall. Perhaps pick out 2 or 3 of them that you want to improve on that number. (1 being never and 10 being always)
- How often do you get 7-8 hours of sleep?
- How many alcoholic beverages do you consume in a week?
- How many days of cardio exercise do you get in a week?
- Do you smoke?
- How would you describe your current weight? (1 being obese and 10 being fit)
- What are your general stress levels? (1 being crazy stressed and 10 being no stress)
- How often do you meditate, pray or practice mindfulness?
- How do you feel about your intimacy with your spouse? (1 being awful and 10 being completely happy)
- How would you describe your overall energy levels without caffeine? (1 being no energy and 10 being energizer bunny)
- How well can you focus? (1 being always distracted and 10 being 100% on task)
